And this game is a military game first and foremost, not an exploration game. Not saying it wasn’t impressive but sorry the military record of this empire is dwarfed by almost any major land war in Europe at that time. The success of Portugal’s & Spanish Empire was mostly due to lack of opponents (Ottomans were a land nation first and foremost), most of Europe doesn’t have an Atlantic or Oceanic Coast. Portugal reached the other side of the globe at the end of the medieval era, this game doesn’t span just that era (1400-1600). Then, the concept extended to other areas in which christians were fighting against other religions or pagans there was nothing special about Reconquista in this regard. Portugal’s actual contribution in the Reconquista is secondary at best compared to Castille and Aragon which always provided the bulk of the christian forces.Ĭrusade is a French word, it originally denoted the campaigns in the levant the first crusade is called such because it was the first of its kind. You are indeed correct not comparable at all. Portugal was engaged on the reconquista for hundreds of years, which is in itself a crusade, participated in the crusades, shocking i know, had several technological breakthroughs, which permitted them to reach the other side of the globe while France was busy in Italy, and was probably the first centralized nation state in europe, unlike France with their independent duchies, and believe me there is so much more.Īnd while France fought half of Europe as you put it, Portugal with less population than them was spanning a global empire.

So yeah, Portugal deserves a spot in an eventual DLC as any other nation. If anything it could mobilize a larger part of its population to the army, due to being centralized.

You are indeed correct not comparable at all.Ī nation of barely 1 million people dividing the world with the crown of Castille and Aragon by the 1500’s.Īnd to be fair looking at historical records of recruitment for the armies, Portugal was well within the standard until professional armies started to be the norm, comparing well enough with England, France and other Iberian powers. Portugal was engaged on the Reconquista for hundreds of years, which is in itself a crusade, participated in the crusades, shocking i know, had several technological breakthroughs, which permitted them to reach the other side of the globe while France was busy in Italy, and was probably the first centralized nation state in Europe, unlike France with their independent duchies, and believe me there is so much more.Īnd while France fought half of Europe as you put it, Portugal with less population than them was spanning a global empire, starting globalization as we know it, fighting Empires that would put most European countries to shame.

That’s actually the only valid justification I can make but as I said, it doesn’t really matter, they will be present no matter what, just deal with it. In this game, it makes sense they’re part of the big 8 due to their long conflict with the French. Now England is a little bit special, we live in an Anglosaxon, consumerist world, it will always be overrated and get too much space no matter what, it’s part business and part indoctrination. The unique unit “Royal Knight” is such a peculiar unit, there were no such things in french armies until the 1400s (household/professional man-at-arms Gendarmes), before then all knights were feudal knights in levy. A clever move if intentional (probably not), as the actual King (and thus “France”) was fairly weak until the 1200s due to extreme feudal decentralization. I will say though, it’s notable the name of the civ is “French” and not France. I’m sorry but you won’t find anything comparable in Portugal no matter how you slice it. At the end of the era, France was fighting half of western Europe for control over Italy. Almost any random french duchy was at least comparable to Portugal in power before in the early/high middle ages. France was the most populous country in Europe, it was the origin of important religious movements, technological breakthroughs, chivalry, the crusades.
